Escape the Traps
The 7 Hidden Patterns That Sabotage Your Leadership Imprint
A book about what gets in your way when you're trying to be a great leader — especially when you're under pressure. By Janet Ioli.
People will forget what you said in the meeting. But they often will not forget how it felt to be in the room with you.
After more than two decades of coaching senior leaders — CEOs, founders, senior executives, and high-potential managers across industries — one pattern keeps showing up: there is almost always a gap between how a leader believes they show up, and how others actually experience being led by them. This book is about why that gap exists, and how to close it.
The seven patterns that sabotage your imprint.
This isn't another book of leadership tips. At this point in your career, more tips about how to lead better doesn't move the needle for long. What's needed now is a clear, honest look in the mirror at the unconscious patterns running how you lead — without you realizing it.
The "It's Not Me" Trap
The story you tell yourself that the real problem is everyone else.
The Autopilot Trap
Operating from past success, old wiring, and reactions you didn't consciously choose.
The Authenticity Trap
The reflex to defend a dysfunctional pattern as "just who I am."
The Ego Trap
When your identity has fused with being the smartest one who has the answers.
The Judgment Trap
The snap assessments that close you off before you've really listened.
The Inner Critic Trap
The voice that drains you long before anyone else ever criticizes you.
The Image Trap
The careful management of how you're perceived at the expense of depth — or the refusal to pay attention to how you're being perceived at all.
These traps trip up most of us trying to be at our best — especially under pressure, when our unconscious reactions and wiring take over.
Which trap is running you?
Most leaders are not running one trap. They are running a system of them, some loud, some quiet, each holding the others in place. This tool designed by Janet after over 25 years of working alongside leaders will open your eyes to the habits that are mining your Leadership Imprint and show you the path to escape the traps. The goal isn't perfection, it never was. The goal is to pause, choose, and lead with intention and impact.
Real moments. Real leaders. Real shifts.
This book is not yet another book of leadership tips and techniques.
It is a composite of the distilled patterns I have watched recur, year after year, across thousands of executives spanning vastly different industries. Real moments, real leaders, real shifts. The examples are anonymized or composed to protect privacy, but they are not invented.
The intent is not to add another impossible standard for you to strive toward. It is to help you see yourself more clearly, to choose your response in the situations where you have typically been on autopilot, and to loosen the grip on the things that made you successful but also keep you trapped.
Escape the Traps is where that practice begins.
